Capillary surfaces in an exotic container: results from space experiments

Experimental results from the Interface Configuration Experiment (ICE) performed aboard the Space Shuttle and the Mir Space Station are reported. The experiment concerns fluid interfaces in certain “exotic” containers in a low-gravity environment. These containers are rotationally symmetric and have the property that for given contact angle and liquid volume, a continuum of distinct rotationall...

Symmetric Capillary Surfaces in a Cube Part 3. More Exotic Surfaces, Gravity

Previous numerical experiments are extended to more complex surfaces and in some cases to nonzero gravity. 1. The Mathematical Problem Let be the unit cube in R 3. We are considering subdomains having a piecewise smooth boundary @ = ? , where ? is a subset of the interior of and is a subset of the boundary @ of. We are looking for those subdomains which solve the following variational problem: ...

Exotic Minimal Surfaces

We prove a general fusion theorem for complete orientable minimal surfaces in R with finite total curvature. As a consequence, complete orientable minimal surfaces of weak finite total curvature with exotic geometry are produced. More specifically, universal surfaces (i.e., surfaces from which all minimal surfaces can be recovered) and space-filling surfaces with arbitrary genus and no symmetries.

Extended annular capillary surfaces

The height of the surface of a fluid in an annular tube is explored using a shooting method to solve a boundary value problem where the radii and the contact angles are given. The contact angles on the inner and outer tube surface need not be the same. These surfaces are then extended so that they are no longer graphs. The extended surfaces are shown to solve a boundary value problem over an an...

Uniqueness Theorems for Stable Anisotropic Capillary Surfaces

We consider capillary surfaces for certain rotationally invariant elliptic parametric functionals supported on two hydrophobically wetted horizontal plates separated by a fixed distance. It is shown that each such stable capillary surface is uniquely determined by the volume interior to the surface.
